%X Increased use and multiuse of medications are significant problems throughout in Europe. In connection with it special attention should be put on the self-medication activities of the population which could be considered as a form of illness behaviour. This is the consequence of the subjective perception of the objective symptoms. The purpose of this study was to collect information about the occurrence of self-medication activities among secondary school pupils. The authors found that there were no significant differences in the symptom spectrum based on which the pupils performed self-medication activities. Most frequent symptoms they choose to treat by self-medication activities were the following: common cold, sore throat, gastrointestinal problems, combustion and contusion. The frequency of seeking medical care proved to be slightly higher among the boys. It is promising that herbs and natural products are often used by them as self-medication resources. The authors emphasize that health education programmes are necessary in developing appropriate self-medication activity behaviour. Pharmacists could play an important role in these programmes.
